It’s not often that Cathers Home gets the opportunity to collect feedback from preschoolers up to 80 year olds all in one project. The Chabad Jewish Community Center in Aspen serves a range of ages and different demographics. It was our job to please all of these stakeholders and to address the design needs for the variety of functions taking place in the center each season.
One challenge was bringing in contemporary furniture designs to match the building’s architecture, while keeping a peaceful, reverent atmosphere that appealed to the traditional members of the community. Cathers Home accomplished this by using classic finishes that complement the openness of the space, while including pops of color in the accessories. The Chabad Jewish Community Center collaborates with local artists to promote and showcase their work. The overall neutral palette of the furnishings lend a graceful elegance to the center, while the bursts of color in the paintings and rugs add a contemporary flair.
We designed furniture to be flexible so that the pieces could move around and go from casual daytime activities to more formal nighttime events. Sectional sofas and lightweight easy chairs allow for an unlimited number of configurations for religious services, bar mitzvahs, weddings and community gatherings. Easy-to-move chairs in the meeting area and synagogue were custom designed with a neutral metal sculpture of aspen leaves and branches that balance any event theme. Modular furniture and small tables add to the flexibility and interchangeability of the furnishings. Custom designed trolleys carry furniture from one place to another.
Providing the design sense to please all of the stakeholders while simultaneously creating a flexible and inviting environment was its own reward. The beautiful and functional spaces of the Jewish Community Center will benefit Aspen residents and visitors for years to come.
